I am an adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist, an assistant professor at the Michigan State University College of Nursing, and the founding director of the Center for Practice Transformation.

I spent nearIy twenty years in clinical practice before I moved into faculty work, most of it in surgical, trauma, and neurological intensive care. That is where the questions came from. I could save the patient in front of me and still watch the system fail the next one.

My work now runs on two tracks. One is methodological: helping clinical teams tell the difference between evidence-based practice, quality improvement, implementation science, and program evaluation, and route their questions to the right one. The other is critical: using queer theory, critical pedagogy, and developmental theory to examine how the ordinary assumptions built into clinical environments decide whose lives are legible to care.

I am a white queer man writing from inside the system and critical of it at the same time. My queerness gives me ground to speak on structural exclusion and on the distance between being welcomed and being heard. On the exclusions I have not lived, my job is to add to the conversation.

I teach in the undergraduate nursing, graduate clinical nurse specialist, and DNP programs, build the infrastructure that gets practicing nurses published, and write about all of it at Margins and Centers.

I speak to nursing faculty, health system leadership, professional associations, and graduate students. I travel, and I take virtual sessions.
